Yellowstone is our land of dreams and we want it to be yours too. We thought it will be a good idea to link the maps of this huge park to the places and the places to the images, so that you can decide for yourself what to do. If you cannot visit Yellowstone, you can still take a look at our pictures from this fascinating national park. If you are using low bandwidth modem connections, it may take some time for the pictures to load. Coming from Salt Lake city, Utah, it may be a good idea to enter the park from the Western entrance. Its a scenic road as you drive down to Madison (14 miles). You will see the herds of Bison. Our natural instinct is to try to go as close to the bison. But that is dangerous. From Madison, the road splits towards Norris in the north and Old Faithful in the south. We took the road to Norris (14 miles). At Norris, we saw the first hot springs in the Norris geyser basin. What really stands out is the Porcelain basin. This open terrain has got colorful hot springs, rainbow colors, hissing steam, and pungent odors. I and Anjana walked thru the heart of the basin. Its geo-thermally very active. We were restricted to boardwalks. I would like to acknowledge the National Park Service as the source of the maps presented in the web site.

Heat from the molten magma chambers underneath, water from rain and snow, limestone reserves, and a rock fracture system through which hot water can reach the earth's surface, combine to make the Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces.

The largest concentration of geysers in the world is in the Old Faithful area, also known as the Upper Geyser Basin. Old Faithful erupts more frequently than any of the other big geysers, although it is not the largest or most regular geyser in the park. Its average interval between eruptions is about 91 minutes, varying from 65 - 92 minutes. An eruption lasts 1 1/2 to 5 minutes, expels 3,700 - 8,400 gallons (14,000 - 32,000 liters) of boiling water, and reaches heights of 106 - 184 feet (30 - 55m).

we had hit across the Lower Geyser basin and the Midway Geyser basin. Midway
Geyser Basin has Yellowstone's largest hot springs, Grand Prismatic Spring.
Its perhaps the most beautiful item in this national park. |

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone has its unique colors. The Lower Falls has a trail leading down to near the falls. The Artist Point, Inspiration Point and Grand View all offer good views of the canyon with the water falls.

On the way from the Canyon Village to the Lake Village, we had a close shave with these bison. They got mad at two youths and chased them. The guys got into a jeep and sped away. These bison got irritated and started measuring us. They aligned them on our lane and started marching straight towards our car. When they were about a foot from our car, the left one changed course and grazed past our car. The right one followed. All this time we were holding our breath and I had my hands on the steering, though I did not know where to escape.

From Lake Yellowstone we went to the eastern entrance of the park. As we went pass the Sylvan pass area, the mom Grizzly with her two cubs climbed up on the road in front of us. As I came out of the car, the mom and her cubs started climbing up the hill. Then we saw them disappearing on the other side of the hill. And then they came back on the road. The mom with her cubs were with us for about twenty minutes as we drove next to them. During this time we drove next to them often a hand shaking distance away. They were trapped between a steep up slope and a steep down slope. So they were walking along the road all this time.

I would like to acknowledge the National Park Service as the source of the maps presented in the web site. We are very thankful to the National Park service and its rangers for doing such a great job in preserving the treasure chests of nature and helping us around in our quest to get familiar and enjoy these wonders.
